Film Daddy talks to Thomas nelstrop, director of The Cabinet

Film Daddy –Thanks for talking to us, so yeah how did the project come about?

Thomas Nelstrop-I’m a sort of semi fan of horror films either they are too good and I can't sleep after I had seen them or they are not good and it's kinda funny. So I was watching the enfield poltergeist and I saw the scene, you know the cliché scene where they are seeing something in the mirror and I wondered what would happen if they started having a conversation and then this sort of developed into this. I had been writing a few micro horrors that me and my friend Bob Pike had done which were variations on a theme of an idea where there was this sat nav that led you to you doom and things like that. They always had that comedy twist to them so when I got this idea I thought I would quite like to direct that myself. I had never directed before so I put a team together and we started filming.

FD -  So was the idea to make something that was funny and cliched?

TN- yeah I’ve done comedy and stand up, I’m an actor and a lot of my work is subverted and stuff so when I saw that, and it had been seen so many times I wanted to do something that plays with that.

FD - How do you feel about it being on the festival scene?

TN- I didn’t imagine any of this, I was advised by a friend of mine that had done the circuit to submit it and I never imagined it would have been accepted. It’s won a few awards as well which is great, I never imagined that, I just thought I would be like learning on the job and hopefully get something passable out of it.

FD - So have you got anything else lined up that you’re working on?

TN-I’m writing a feature at the moment which is in a similar tone, it plays around with some of the same ideas. As an actor I’ve got quite a few things coming up but as a director, just because I’m new to it, finding my feet and playing with a few ideas, and hopefully I’ll do one next year

FD - Well thanks for taking the time to speak with us and best of luck in the future.
